Honors, Appointments and Awards

LANCE R. BROBERG was asked to serve on the Maricopa County Superior Court’s Civil Department Task Force – Innovation Subcommittee. The 10-person Subcommittee is comprised of five judicial officers, four attorneys, and the Civil Court’s administrative officer. The Subcommittee is tasked with exploring how the Courts and parties in civil cases may use procedures and technology to resolve cases in a way that maintains access to the Courts and promotes the right to a jury trial while facilitating alternatives to the now-unavailable jury trial.
LANCE R. BROBERG served as Plaintiff’s counsel for a first-of-its-kind mock jury trial conducted in Maricopa County to determine how the Courts may best be able to navigate the current and post-COVID-19 environment. The effort involved numerous judicial officers, professional jury consultants from across the country, and has been circulated nation-wide to assist with the return to court and ensuring access to justice.
LANCE R. BROBERG regularly serves as a presenter or panelist for Continuing Legal Education programs. Recently, Lance has served as a panelist and presenter for numerous webinars titled The Future of Civil Trials. The well-attended seminars focused on both how civil jury trials are likely to be conducted in the COVID-19 environment and alternatives that are both in place and envisioned that may permit more economical and efficient resolution of cases. Lance has presented for the Maricopa County Bar Association, the Scottsdale Bar Association, the Arizona Women Lawyers Association, and others.
LANCE R. BROBERG was named Top Pro Bono Attorney for Arizona in 2017 by the Arizona Foundation for Legal Services & Education.
LANCE R. BROBERG was listed as a Super Lawyers Southwest Rising Star – Arizona (2013-2019): Super Lawyers conducts a general survey and research concerning attorneys under 40 years old. The lawyers are then ranked by point totals with the highest 2.5% being named “Rising Stars”. It appears that Lance’s star has risen—or he has aged out.
LANCE R. BROBERG has long known that he wanted to be a trial attorney. Lance’s High School Mock Trial team won the National Championship in 1997 (a year after finishing Second). In college Lance was identified as the Nation’s outstanding mock trial attorney and was asked to participate an exhibition for other college mock trial participants attending the national championship. In law school, Lance was the first student in school history to win both of the school’s trial argument competitions in the same year; the Jenckes Closing Argument Competition (a competition between U of A Law and ASU Law) and the Grand Damages Argument Competition. On graduation, Lance was recognized with the William T. Birmingham Award for Trial Advocacy as well as the Law College Association Achievement Award.

Community Activities

Board Member: The Arizona Bar Foundation. The Arizona State Bar Foundation’s 501(c)(3) organization tasked with promoting access to justice for all Arizonans.
Coordinator for the Arizona High School Mock Trial Program. Having been a participant, a coach, and a case author, Lance coordinates and runs both the Regional and State High School Mock Trial Tournaments.
Coach. Lance can frequently be found coaching his two boys in Soccer, Baseball, Football…and who knows what they will want to play next!

Other Activities

In his free time, Lance loves spending time with his wife (Tiffany—already an accomplished attorney who has decided that a global pandemic is not enough to stop her from pursuing an Executive MBA from ASU) and two awesome and active boys (Bennett & Evan).

Biography

Lance Broberg is a trial attorney who is committed to serving his clients with their diverse and complex needs. Lance focuses extensively in matters involving intra-corporate disputes, contract disputes, real estate disputes, commercial landlord-tenant disputes, restrictive covenants, and trade misappropriation claims. Lance keenly attempts to determine his clients’ goals and always pursues and prefers resolution from reasonable dialogue and agreement. But Lance understands that some disputes require Court intervention. Simply, Lance believes that attorney should hope for the best but plan for the worst.

Lance fondly recalls a well-respected trial attorney proclaim that a litigator, as many attorneys fancy themselves, is a creature more voracious than an alligator, who feeds on paper, and who rarely sees the inside of a courtroom other than on a discovery motion. Lance is not a litigator. He is a trial attorney. Lance has demonstrated his trial ability in every level, Justice Court to City Court, State to Federal, State Supreme Court to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. And Lance has extraordinary experience in both bench and jury trials in both Arizona and New Mexico. Lance has received multiple rare punitive damage jury verdicts stemming from business disputes, successfully defended a $30 million trade misappropriation claim, has tried bankruptcy fraud claims, has tried probate claims, has defended criminal claims, and has arbitrated everything from small neighbor disputes to easement and property boundary matters. Lance believes all matters deserve proper attention regardless of the dollars in dispute.

In recognition of his trial accomplishments, Lance was asked to serve on a Task Force focused on how to reopen the Courts for jury trials in the new and post COVID-19 environment. Lance was also asked to serve as Plaintiff’s counsel in a mock jury trial to be utilized nation-wide for purposes of determining how courts may reopen following the COVID-19 pandemic. Lance has been honored to help.
